Health & Safety Emergency Exercises: Striving for Failure
Date: Thursday June 12, 2025 at 2:00pm ET - 1:00pm CT - 11:00am PT
This webinar explores how to move beyond simply running safety exercises to learning from the moments in them when things don’t go as planned. We’ll discuss how to use these exercises for exposing hidden weaknesses across safety protocols, operations, supply chains, staffing, and compliance systems, including:
- Designing scenario-based exercises that go beyond obvious threats
- Ensuring after-action reviews capture failure insights, not just successes
- Understanding failure types and how this affects planning, training and H&S processes
- Correctly communicating that “failure is allowed” to lower participant stress and errors
- When to pause the exercise to train or correct, including rapid-response thinking
- Recognizing and tracking action stress points that emerge outside the primary exercise scenario
- Prioritizing response strategies without losing sight of ultimate safety/risk mitigation goals
- How to build better H&S prevention/response systems from your discoveries, incorporating continuous improvement
- How to frame negative exercise outcomes in business terms to secure leadership buy-in for changes
Whether you’re preparing for natural hazards like heatwaves, wildfires, earthquakes and droughts, or man-made crises such as workplace violence, equipment malfunctions, or sudden regulation shifts, this session will help you go beyond box-checking and scripted responses and extract actionable insights from every simulation. More importantly, it will help you ask the right questions when things don’t go according to plan.

- Emergency preparedness coordinators
